CA Congressional District 11

district_mapCalifornia’s diverse11th Congressional District stretches west from the Central Valley city of Stockton over the coastal mountains to Danville in Contra Costa County.

The district includes parts of San Joaquin, Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara Counties.

San Joaquin County represents 55% of the district’s voters, and includes the communities of Tracy, Ripon, Escalon, Lodi and a large part of Stockton.  The district also includes the communities of Danville and San Ramon in Contra Costa County, Dublin  in Alameda County, and a very small portion of Santa Clara County.

Republicans outnumber Democrats by 12,000 voters.  Current registration is:

  • 42% Republican
  • 38% Democratic
  • 20% Independent and other party voters

The district has a history of electing Republican candidates.

Governor Schwarzenegger and President Bush easily won here.  In 2006, Tom McClintock, Republican for Lt. Governor, and Steve Poizner, Republican for Insurance Commissioner, carried the district as well.

Backed by millions of dollars in independent expenditure campaigns and a national tide against congressional Republicans at the time, Democrat Jerry McNerney defeated incumbent Republican Congressman Richard Pombo by 53% to 47% in 2006.  (Two years earlier, Pombo had defeated McNerney by 21%.)
